History

The MHW Group Family of Companies, headquartered in Reisterstown, Maryland, is comprised of three business groups: refrigerated/insulated railcars, truck/motor transportation and cold storage warehousing.  Through our leveraging power, as one of the industry’s largest transportation networks, MHW Group combines technology and services to tailor transportation solutions to meet the needs of our customers, shippers, carriers and suppliers.

COLD STORAGE WAREHOUSING

COLD STORAGE WAREHOUSING
  • 1975 – Mt. Airy Cold Storage, located in Mt. Airy, Maryland, opened its doors as MHW Group’s first public refrigerated warehouse location.
  • 1976 – Mt. Airy was expanded to accommodate the growing business needs of the community.
  • 1980 – Mt. Airy expanded a second time as a means to stay at pace with the vast growth in the area.
  • 1985 – Mt. Airy underwent its third and final expansion which brought the total space of the building to 96,000 square feet.
  • 1995 – Chambersburg Cold Storage was constructed and opened for business in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania.
  • 1997 – The Chambersburg facility was expanded to continue to keep pace with the growing needs of the area.
  • 2000 – Chambersburg was expanded for a second time bringing the space of the building to 375,000 square feet.
  • 2007 – In June 2007, Mt. Airy Cold Storage closed its doors to make way for the MHW Group’s new 360,000 square foot facility, Perryville Cold Storage, located in Perryville, Maryland.
  • 2009 – Approximately 14,000 pallet positions at Chambersburg were converted to a cooler to accommodate the more diverse market base requirements.
  • 2010 – Perryville’s growth was unprecedented and Perryville quickly became the primary forward distribution warehouse for one of the world’s largest fast food restaurants.
  • 2015 – Perryville was designated as a key forward distribution center for one of the largest makers of potato products.
  • 2016 – Chambersburg was awarded a three year commitment to store poultry for one of the fastest growing poultry houses in the area.
  • RAIL TRANSPORTATION

    RAIL TRANSPORTATION
  • 1985 – Cryo-Trans, Inc. was introduced to the shipping community. A patent was secured for a cryogenic railcar immediately revolutionizing the perishable food and beverage rail industry.
  • 1986 thru 1995 – Through customer engagements, long term leases were realized for approximately 500 railcars.
  • 2000 thru 2001 – Due to rising cost of CO2, the majority of the Cryo fleet was converted to mechanically refrigerated railcars, providing a much lower cost option to the marketplace.
  • 2001 thru 2012 – Cryo-Trans continued to expand its fleet with 64’ and 72’ refrigerated railcars.
  • 2013 – Fifty new 72’ mechanically refrigerated railcars were constructed and added to the fleet.
  • 2014 – Cryo-Trans introduced the first new insulated 68’ private boxcars.
  • 2015 – Fifty new 72’ mechanically refrigerated railcars and twenty-five insulated railcars were constructed and added to the fleet. The first annual Rail Summit took place in September giving rail customers a forum to discuss best practices.
  • 2016 – In January, the Private Railcar Food and Beverage Association (PRFBA) was established by a select group of railcar shippers. By the end of the year, the CRYX fleet will consist of more than 1800 mechanically refrigerated and insulated railcars.
  • TRUCK TRANSPORTATION

    TRUCK TRANSPORTATION
  • 2005 – Cryo-Trans Logistics, LLC, located at the MHW Group Corporate Headquarters, opened its doors to provide a full end-to-end distribution system for our rail customers. CTL offers rail shippers temperature controlled truck transportation from our cold storage warehouses to their end customers.
